Review Carousel Customization

12 min read

The review carousel is one of Eevy AI's most popular section types. It displays reviews in a horizontal, scrollable strip that visitors can swipe or click through. But the default carousel is just the starting point — there are dozens of configuration options that affect how it looks, behaves, and performs.

This guide covers every carousel customization option, explains how each affects the visitor experience, and shows you how the genetic algorithm tests these parameters to find the optimal configuration for your store.

Card Styles and Content Display

Each review in the carousel is displayed as a card. You can configure: Card style — minimal (text only), standard (rating + text + author), rich (includes photo, verified badge, and product name), or compact (abbreviated text with rating). Text truncation — how many lines of review text to show before a "Read more" link. Rating display — stars, numeric, or both. Author info — full name, first name only, or initials. Verified badge — show or hide the verified purchase indicator. Rich cards drive more engagement but show fewer reviews per viewport. The genetic algorithm frequently tests card style variations because the impact on RPV can be significant — sometimes a minimal card outperforms a rich card because it lets visitors scan more reviews quickly.

Navigation and Auto-Play

Carousel navigation includes arrow buttons, dot indicators, swipe gestures, and optional auto-play. Arrow style — inside the carousel, outside, or hidden (swipe only). Dot indicators — show current position as dots below the carousel, or hide them for a cleaner look. Auto-play — automatically advance cards at a configurable interval (3-10 seconds). Auto-play can increase impressions per review but may annoy visitors who are reading. Pause on hover — stops auto-play when the cursor is over the carousel. Loop — whether the carousel wraps around or stops at the last card. The genetic algorithm tests auto-play on versus off, and when on, it tests different interval speeds.

Responsive Behavior

Your carousel needs to look good on every screen size. Eevy AI's carousel is responsive by default, but you can fine-tune the breakpoint behavior. Cards per view — how many cards are visible simultaneously at each breakpoint. A common setup is 1 card on mobile, 2 on tablet, and 3-4 on desktop. Card gap — spacing between cards, which may differ per breakpoint. Peek — whether the next card peeks into view at the edge, signaling to visitors that there is more to scroll. Peek is especially important on mobile where swipe affordances are less obvious. The genetic algorithm tests these responsive configurations independently, so your mobile carousel may evolve differently than your desktop one.

Sorting and Filtering Reviews

Which reviews appear in the carousel matters as much as how they look. Sort order — most recent, highest rated, most helpful (based on helpfulness votes), or algorithmically sorted by engagement data. Minimum rating — show only 4-5 star reviews, or include all ratings for authenticity. Photo/video priority — boost reviews with media to the front. Minimum text length — filter out very short reviews that add little value. Verified only — show only verified purchase reviews. These filters directly affect the quality of content in your carousel. The genetic algorithm tests different combinations to find the balance between showing your best reviews and maintaining enough volume to fill the carousel.

Advanced: Custom CSS and Theming

For stores that need precise brand alignment, Eevy AI supports custom CSS overrides on carousel elements. Access this in Sections → [Your Carousel] → Advanced → Custom CSS. Common customizations include matching card background colors to your theme, adjusting font sizes, customizing the arrow icon, and modifying border radius for card corners. Keep custom CSS minimal — the genetic algorithm can only optimize parameters it controls, so heavy CSS overrides may limit optimization potential. If you need a specific look, set it via custom CSS and let the algorithm optimize the non-visual parameters like sort order, cards per view, and auto-play behavior.

Wrapping Up

The review carousel is a flexible section type with dozens of configuration options. Set your brand preferences for visual styling, and let the genetic algorithm handle the performance-sensitive parameters like card style, sort order, auto-play, and responsive behavior. The algorithm will test hundreds of combinations over time to find what drives the most revenue for your specific audience.
