Print on Demand
Print on demand (POD) is an e-commerce fulfillment model where products are manufactured only after a customer places an order, with designs printed onto blank products like t-shirts, mugs, phone cases, and books by a third-party printer who also handles shipping.
Understanding Print on Demand
Print on demand eliminates inventory risk entirely. Merchants create designs, list them on their store, and when an order comes in, the POD provider prints the design on the product, packages it, and ships it directly to the customer. The merchant never touches the physical product. Popular POD platforms include Printful, Printify, Gooten, and Gelato, all of which integrate directly with Shopify.
The economic model trades margin for risk. POD products have lower profit margins than bulk-ordered inventory because per-unit production costs are higher. However, there is no upfront inventory investment, no warehousing costs, and no risk of unsold stock. This makes POD ideal for testing new designs, niche products, and creative businesses that prioritize variety over volume.
Reviews are particularly important for POD products because print quality, color accuracy, material feel, and sizing can vary between providers. Customers sharing photos of their received products provide crucial social proof about the actual quality — bridging the gap between the digital mockup on the product page and the physical product that arrives.
Why It Matters for E-Commerce
Print on demand has democratized e-commerce by enabling anyone to launch a product line with zero upfront investment. For creative entrepreneurs and niche brands, POD provides a risk-free way to test markets and build an audience before committing to traditional inventory.
