Review Density
Review density is the average number of reviews per active product across your store catalog — calculated as total reviews divided by number of active SKUs.
Understanding Review Density
Review density is a more useful metric than total review count for stores with large catalogs. A store with 10,000 reviews across 5,000 SKUs has 2 reviews per product on average — which is structurally too thin for any single product to convert well, regardless of how impressive 10,000 cumulative reviews sounds.
The relevant benchmarks: stores with average density below 5 reviews per SKU are in collection-priority mode; stores in the 10-30 range are healthy; stores above 50 average density have strong social proof per page.
The practical implication is prioritization. A store with 1,000 SKUs and 5,000 reviews should not try to push average density evenly. Instead, concentrate review velocity on the top 20-50 SKUs (by traffic or revenue) and accept lower density on long-tail products. The CVR impact of review concentration on high-traffic SKUs vastly outweighs the impact of even distribution.
Why It Matters for E-Commerce
Stores often look at total review count and feel comfortable, but density is what actually drives per-product CVR. A store with 50,000 reviews evenly distributed across 5,000 products converts worse than a store with 10,000 reviews concentrated on 500 high-traffic SKUs.
How Eevy AI Helps
Eevy AI's analytics layer shows review density per product and per category, helping merchants identify SKUs where collection effort would have outsized CVR impact. The optimization layer then ensures the displayed reviews on those high-density SKUs convert at peak rates.
Related Terms
Review velocity is the rate at which a store accumulates new reviews over time — typically measured as reviews per product per month or reviews per 100 orders.
An aggregate rating is a combined score calculated from multiple individual reviews, typically displayed as a star rating alongside a review count, both on-site and in search engine results via structured data.
Social proof is a psychological phenomenon where people look to the actions and opinions of others to guide their own behavior, especially in situations of uncertainty. In e-commerce, it manifests as reviews, ratings, testimonials, purchase counts, and user-generated content that signal product quality and trustworthiness.
